Slade Collins
and the Secret of Tahawus

Chapter 1: “Lucille”

The Two Times Club has fifteen rooms. This page takes them in the order you can clear them. Enemy details are on the Enemies page, and the two big fights are on Bosses.

How the club works

  • Keys. There are two small keys and two locked doors. Either key opens either door, so you can't waste one. Walk into a locked door while carrying a key and it opens.
  • Locked doors. Without a key, Slade says “Huh, it's locked. Need a small key.” The big double door in the Main Bar doesn't take a key. Slade just says “This is a big door. Tony must be a big man.”
  • Crates. Only the 3-LB Hammer breaks them, and you have to swing it. Each crate is worth 10 points and sometimes drops money or health. Crates come back every time you walk in through the club's front door.
  • Bookshelves. Every bookshelf you can walk up to has something to say. Most say “Nothing interesting here.” Four hide something. See Bookshelf finds.
  • Pickups. Keys, cash and items sit on the floor and glint. Walk onto one and Slade holds it up. Cash comes with a “Well, hot damn!”
  • Cleared rooms stay cleared until you leave through the front door. Beaten enemies stay down even if you only beat one of a pair. If you die, the rooms go back to how they were when you saved.
  • Enemies can't stack up on top of each other, so a crowd always comes at you from separate squares.

Step 1: Lobby

The doormen check your card, and after that they leave you alone. Try talking to them again and all you get is “... ...” Joe is standing in here too. Talk to him and choose SAVE. His BUY option works here as well. Go north to the Main Bar.

The club Lobby: two doormen stand by the north door, and Joe stands on the left.
The Lobby. Joe can save your game here too.

Step 2: Main Bar

Two Two Times Thugs. The second one waits a moment before he joins in, so take out the first one fast.

  • There's $10 behind the bar, but a crate blocks the only gap in the counter. Come back with the Hammer.
  • The big door on the north wall stays shut until you solve the Double Room puzzle.

Go west to the Dance Floor.

Step 3: Dance Floor

A Thug and a Pool Cue Punk. The Punk is closer and hits harder, so back off east, let him come to you, and hit him while he's still walking.

Step 4: Card Room (optional, but worth it)

South of the Dance Floor. A Thug and a Pool Cue Punk wait on the east side of the pool table. Deal with them the same way you did on the Dance Floor, then look around.

Slade walks into the Card Room from the north door. A Thug stands on the near side of the green pool table, between Slade and the table, and a Pool Cue Punk waits on its east side.
The Card Room's two guards.
  • The Dungeon Map is on the floor in the bottom-left corner. It fills in the whole club on your Map screen.
  • There's cash on the right side of the room.
  • Face the framed sign on the north wall and press A: “TONY LIKES THINGS TWICE TWICE.” That's the answer to the Double Room.
  • One of the bookshelves in here hides $5.

Step 5: Kitchen

West of the Dance Floor. A Thug and a Bottle Thrower. The Thrower attacks from a distance, so step off his row or column when his arm goes up.

  • The coffee machine on the north wall refills your Travel Mug for free. Face it and press A. After that it needs about a minute before it pours again.
  • Two crates block the corridor to the north. You'll need the Hammer.

Step 6: Bookkeeper's Office

South of the Kitchen. Beat the Switchblade Rat and a small key drops onto the black pad in the bottom-right corner. Walk onto it. There's also cash in the bottom-left corner, and one of the bookshelves in here has a grenade tucked inside.

Step 7: Stockroom

West of the Kitchen. Two Thugs and a Bottle Thrower. This room gives a lot of players trouble, so drink from the Travel Mug first if you're hurt, and take out the Thrower first.

  • Grab the grenade cache (two grenades) in the top-left corner and the cash in the top-right alcove.
  • Another $10 sits behind the two crates by the west wall. Get it once you have the Hammer.
  • One bookshelf hides an orange backpack with a grenade in it.
  • Walk into the locked south door with your key to open it.

Step 8: Workshop

A Pool Cue Punk and a Bottle Thrower. Head west to the Garage. The two crates in the east wall are a shortcut to the Bookkeeper's Office once you have the Hammer. Breaking either one opens it.

Step 9: Garage

A Thug, a Pool Cue Punk and a Switchblade Rat. Clear the room, then walk onto the 3-LB Hammer in the middle of the floor. It goes onto A if your Fists are still there.

Quick tip

Try the Hammer on the Garage's two crates on your way out. On the way back, swing east at the Workshop's crates to take the shortcut through the Bookkeeper's Office to the Kitchen. This is also a good time to leave the club and grab the Brackish DVD.

Step 10: The Double Room puzzle

  1. In the Kitchen, stand below the crates in the north corridor, face them and swing the Hammer. Breaking either one opens the way.
  2. Go north into the Double Room. There are three switches and no enemies.
  3. Step on one switch, step off, then step on the same switch again. A chime plays and Slade says it sounds like something opened.
Slade stands on the left-hand switch in the Double Room. The other two switches are to his right.
The Double Room. Use the same switch twice.
Wrong switch?

If your second step lands on a different switch, the puzzle is going to fail. Step on the third switch to reset everything, then try again with the same switch twice.

Step 11: The Kitchen ambush

Solving the puzzle sends more of Tony's men into the Kitchen. When you walk back in, two Thugs and a Bottle Thrower are waiting, and a second Bottle Thrower walks in after you drop one of them.

Quick tip

A Bottle Thrower stops and raises its arm before it throws, and the bottle flies straight along that row or column. Sidestep as soon as you see the wind-up, then close in and punch.

Slade walks back into the Kitchen from the north corridor. Three of Tony's men are waiting for him.
The Kitchen ambush.

Step 12: Enforcer's Den

Head back to the Main Bar. Break the crate in the bar counter for the $10, then go through the big north door, which is open now. The Garage Bruiser is waiting. See Bosses. Beating him opens the north door.

Step 13: Security Room

West of the Enforcer's Den. Don't skip it: the Pool Cue Punk in here drops the second small key, and you need it for Tony's door. There's a Switchblade Rat and some cash in here too. The door to this room is always open, so you can get the key before the Bruiser if you like.

Step 14: Private Landing and Tony's Lounge

North of the Enforcer's Den, the Private Landing has one Switchblade Rat and a bookshelf with $10 hidden in a book.

Take a quick trip west into Tony's Lounge before you go up. It has two Thugs, the club's second coffee machine and a cash pile that's usually the biggest in the building. Fill your Travel Mug here.

Step 15: Tony's Office

Walk into the Private Landing's north door with your key. The first time you come in, Tony has a few words for you. Then his three bodyguards come at you. Beat them, then beat Tony. See Tony Two Times.

The ending

  1. Tony drops a heart container. Walk onto it for a fourth heart and 1,000 points.
  2. Lucille drops across the room. Walk onto her. Slade is taken back out to the street in front of the club.
  3. Take one step and a Switchblade Rat walks in to stop you. Slade squares off with him, and you can't move until he's down.
  4. One hit from anything drops him. This is the perfect time to press Start, put Lucille on a button and fire.
  5. Go to Denny and The Mule, back at their spot three screens north of where the game began. Talk to him and answer YES when he asks if you're ready to leave Utica.
  6. Watch the final scene. Chapter 2 begins as soon as it ends, with everything Slade has earned.
Collet, close up, says: “My niece, Tila, and my nephew, Jake, went camping up north... and never came back.”
Collet asks Slade for help.
About that last scene

A woman named Collet walks up to Slade and Denny. Her niece and nephew, Tila and Jake, went camping up north and never came back, and she wants Slade to find them. She says the place is called Tahawus, and that's where Chapter 2 is headed. Pressing Start during the scene skips ahead to Slade's last line.
