Slade Collins
and the Secret of Tahawus
Chapter 1: “Lucille”
Utica is a 4×4 grid of screens. Walk off the edge of one and you move to the next. Nothing on the street is labeled, so count screens to find your way around.
The opening scene
Slade catches a thief in his Jeep outside Cafe Cappelli, and the thief gets away with Lucille. The scene plays by itself until the chapter title, which waits for a button. Press A or B to speed up the text, or press Start to skip straight to the game.
Slade's Jeep is parked one step from where you start. Walk up to it and press A. The thief made a mess of it.
Step 1: Find Denny Rigg
From where you start, go three screens north in the same column. You'll find an army truck called The Mule with Denny Rigg standing next to it. Walk up to Denny from any side and press A.
Denny stole the truck before Tony's crew could, but Tony's boys took its ignition coil. Finding it is your job. If you come back without it, all he says is “No coil, no Mule.”
Step 2: Get the ignition coil
The coil only turns up after Denny asks you for it, so talk to him first.
- Head to the Macartovin building on the east side of town and walk up into its back door at the top of a narrow alley.
- Inside, go up the hallway to the sign that reads Basement ↓ / Mail Room →, then head east.
- Keep going east through the dark corridor. You'll come out in the Mail Room.
- Stand under the right-hand mailbox and press A. Its label reads “Mrs Romano. 4D.”
- Slade finds the coil and holds it up. It's worth 100 points.
There's a rat in the hallway and another in the Mail Room. They bite for a quarter heart if you get close, and they're hard to see in the dark corridor. Two punches each, and they stay dead until you leave the building. Each one is worth 100 points.
Step 3: Get the club card
Take the coil back to Denny and talk to him. After a quick chat about whose mailbox that was, he hands you a club membership card he says he “found,” and tells you to get yourself a steak at the club. Slade holds the card over his head, then it counts in for 1,000 points. This is the only way into the Two Times Club.
Talk to Denny again after you have the card. He offers some surplus. Say YES to open his shop, where grenades cost $40 each. See Shops.
Step 4: Stop at Cafe Cappelli
The Cafe is on the screen where you start. It's worth a visit before the club.
- Joe, behind the counter: talk to him from the front of the counter. His menu has CHAT, BUY (a Travel Mug refill for $15) and SAVE.
- The Strange Man, in the corner: his advice to press Start and drink some coffee is a real hint. Put the Travel Mug on B now.
- Mrs. Romano, by the table: she's the one who says she needs to go home and check her mail.
- The right-hand bookshelf: search it for a free grenade and 200 points. It only works once.
Choose CHAT on Joe's menu first. Then talk to the statue on the right side of the room and answer YES when it asks if you like Joe's statue. The statue slides out of the way and opens up the alcove behind it. Take the stairs there onto the roof, head north, and take the $10 at the far end.
Step 5: Save and head to the club
- Save with Joe. Choose SAVE on his menu and pick a file.
- Walk to the Two Times Club. It's three screens north and one screen east of where you start, on the top edge of town.
- As you reach the door, Denny drives The Mule over for a quick word. This only happens once.
- Go inside. The doormen, Vin Vin and Lou Lou, check your card and let you in. Without the card, they throw you back out.
Continue with Walkthrough: The Two Times Club.
Later: the Macartovin basement
Three crates block the bottom of the basement stairs, and only the 3-LB Hammer can break them. The Hammer is in the club's Garage, so come back here once you have it. The prize is the Brackish DVD, worth 5,000 points.
- Go back into the Macartovin building and take the stairs down from the hallway.
- Put the Hammer on a button, face a crate and swing. You can reach one side of each crate from the bottom of the stairs, and breaking any one of them opens the room.
- Read the four bookshelves along the top wall. Each one names a Blu-ray, and each sits above one of the four floor switches.
- Counting the switches 1 to 4 from left to right, step on 3, 2, 4, 1.
- The DVD drops onto the floor. Walk onto it and Slade holds it up while a big fanfare plays and the points count up.
The switches sit in one unbroken row, and anything you touch counts. If you walk sideways along them, you'll press them in the wrong order. Travel along the row just above the switches instead. Line up over the one you want, press Down once, then Up once before you move sideways again.
A wrong order costs half a heart and resets the switches, so save first and come down with some health to spare. Two rats live down here too. Beat them before you start, or a hit can knock you onto the wrong switch.
